Iran Protests Continue as Death Toll Surpasses 2,500 and Erfan Soltani Faces Execution (Open Ai)
New Delhi: The ongoing movement against the government in Iran has reached its 18th day today, but instead of coming under control, the situation seems to be becoming more dangerous. News coming from different parts of the country shows that the protests are showing no sign of stopping. Contradictory figures are emerging regarding the number of deaths amid violence and action.
In some reports this figure is said to be around 2,000, while in some claims this number is said to be up to 20,000. Iranian human rights organizations based in the US say the death toll could exceed 18,000. Meanwhile, international concern has increased further after the case of a young man came to light.
Irfan Sultani, 26, was detained on January 8 for his involvement in a protest. A few days later, on January 11, Iranian authorities declared him guilty. He was accused of “Moharebeh”, which is said to mean waging war against God. According to media reports, Irfan is expected to be hanged publicly. After this news came to light, uneasiness has increased both inside and outside Iran.
Human rights organizations claim that neither an open hearing was held in Irfan's case nor was he provided an independent lawyer. For this reason, this case is being seen at the international level as a possibility of judicial murder.
US President Donald Trump has given a strong warning to Iran. He has said that if the protesters are hanged, there will be serious consequences. The US State Department has also claimed that Iran is preparing to hang Irfan Sultani.
Trump held a high-level meeting at the White House regarding Irfan's case. After this, speculations intensified that America was deciding the next step regarding Iran. Trump's statements have further strengthened these fears.
Trump had appealed to Iranian protesters on his social media platform to occupy government buildings. He also said American help was on the way. These statements have created a stir at the international level.
According to the Human Rights Activist News Agency, more than 600 protests have so far been recorded in all 31 provinces of Iran. It is clear from this that the movement is no longer limited to any one city.
The death toll is more than 2,400, according to CNN. Reuters, quoting government sources, has put this figure at around 2,000. At the same time, some international websites and human rights groups are claiming many more deaths than this.
British website Iran International claims that 12,000 protesters have been killed in the last 17 days. According to reports, most of the deceased were below 30 years of age.
Reports said Revolutionary Guards and Basij forces responded in large numbers. These steps are being said to be directly related to the orders of the government.
It is alleged that the Iranian government has shut down internet and communication services so that information about the incidents cannot go out. International investigation and reporting has also been affected by this.
Analysts believe that this period is becoming the most violent phase in Iran's recent history. The fear of hanging, increasing international pressure, and internal discontent may make the coming days decisive.
